Masterminds Review

I swear, with the lineup of new movies coming as we head into the fall season, we are going to have some good movies. I am hoping and praying that things start to look up but as for the Wampaslayer mid-week review, this shall not be so. I took some time this week to see Masterminds this week and it was a mess. We saw the information for this movie about a year ago but amid a financial breakdown of Relativity Media, the film was pulled from the release schedule. Now in 2016, the movie began advertising with a larger cast and finally a release date. In my personal opinion it was a broken mess with the only funny moments being the advertised trailers.

Masterminds is a comical recreation of the 1997 Loomis Fargo Robbery. A litany of comedic actors, Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis, and Owen Wilson, plan to steal $17 million from an armored car company. There is nothing really intrinsically funny in that plot so the movie attempts to wrench comedy out of slapstick gags and making fun of southern people. My family is from the south and I live and work in Taylor, Michigan so I’m not going to try to tell you that the ridiculous things that people get up to in a trailer park aren’t hilarious but in this case, they just coat a bunch of bad jokes in a southern accent and hope you find it funny. Do you know why Talladega Nights works so well? Because it never made fun of Nascar fans, it made light of the ridiculous parts of the sport.

This one is going to be short because a bad comedy is bad because it didn’t make you laugh. It’s not about the actors, the plot structure, or the pacing, it’s about the jokes. Masterminds was not funny and really not very interesting so I would skip it this week. This will be put on the back catalog of all of the actors in this film so I would expect it to show up on streaming soon.

I promise I really don’t like writing these kinds of reviews but I have hope for the future. I have heard a couple people who actually read and use these reviews so I would like to ask a question of the community. These bad movies keep coming and I would love to avoid them and see some indie stuff that I have missed. If you have a suggestion please leave it in the comments below!
