Fan favorite character Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad, has had a rumored spin off planned by Warner Bros for some time. Well, it has been officially confirmed this past week, and it may not be as solo as some may have hoped.
Harley Quinn was originally created by Paul Dini to be a sidekick for the Joker, but her popularity skyrocketed on the Batman: The Animated Series cartoon, and since then has become one of DC’s most popular characters, male or female. Harley Quinn has also been the Joker’s therapist, sent to Arkham to work with the clown prince, and from there, she fell in love with him.
As stated earlier, the film will not quite be the solo affair that some may have hoped for. The film will also focus on other DC heroines and villainesses, such as the Birds of Prey and Batgirl. This decision, as well as the Wonder Woman movie, show that DC and Warner Bros aren’t afraid to showcase their girl power. Wonder Woman, who first appeared in Batman vs Superman, will have her own movie in 2017. The Birds of Prey, which is an all-female group, has had some mention up to this point, in the form of Huntress on CW’s Arrow.
Robbie is set to not only star in the film, but she will take up the mantle of producer as well. Recently, Robbie has really come into her own as a big time star. Aside from starring in Suicide Squad (and quite frankly stealing the show) she was also in Tarzan playing the role of Jane. Fans of hers will also recall her excellent performance in The Wolf of Wall Street.
What are your thoughts? A stand-alone movie for Robbie’s Quinn is a great choice for Warner Bros to make, as she was easily the best part of the Suicide Squad film. Only time will tell just what the film will truly feature and offer.
