Streaming services have been creating great content, and network TV needs to be concerned. Netflix is leading the way, what with Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and many more. I didn’t even mention the great Marvel content, as that seems to be in a category all its own. While I still have cable (gasp!) I find that I’m more excited for new Netflix seasons to drop, and that probably has to do with the fact the entire season releases in one day. The only real show I get excited for that isn’t on Netflix is Game of Thrones, and frankly, that’s one of the biggest reasons I still pay for cable.
I have watched many an hour of TV, and most of it on Netflix. I didn’t even mention all of the original programs I’ve seen on Netflix, as I recently finished season 1 of both Master of None and Voltron. This is a great time to be a TV watcher, and I’m fully engrossed and can’t wait for more. Now on to specifics, and why you should watch.
First up, and my personal favorites, are the Marvel shows. Daredevil burst onto the scene a couple of years ago, and my first impression continues to be my current one: wow. The show is beautifully acted and shot, and the story is fully involved. Great acting abounds, from lead Charlie Cox all the way to Mighty Duck alum Elden Henson playing the role of Foggy Nelson. But the main reason you should watch it is for the gritty nature of the character being brought to life in such a great way. Daredevil has no real “superpowers” to speak of, so it remains a very relatable story. Season 2 introduced both Elektra and the Punisher, and frankly (hehe) he stole the show, and makes me super happy to see his stand alone show.
Be sure to also check out Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones was great, but not for everyone. She is such a little known character to the public before this, so her early reception was mixed. But do yourself and watch, its really quite good. Fans of David Tennant should be sure to check out the show too, as he plays the villain with great skill. Fans were also introduced to Luke Cage, who’s next up for his own show. And following that will be Danny Rand, known as Iron Fist. All of this will culminate into The Defenders show, where all 4 of these titular heroes will band together and protect Hell’s Kitchen.
Next up, and it seems to go without saying these days, is Stranger Things. Do you like Stephen King, Steven Spielberg and the 80s? Then be sure to check out this great show. From episode one all the way until the end of the season, you are pulled into this rich world of mystery, suspense, intrigue, creature scares, and Dungeons and Dragons. I won’t go to in depth with the show, as the guys (and Bridgette) have covered most of it in our review podcast – Wampaslayer Reviews: Stranger Things – but I loved the show from start to finish, and can’t wait to see what they have in store for the next season.
Up next, in a dead heat, are Orange is the New Black and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Orange has been on for a few seasons now, and each is getting better and better, and also way more emotionally involved. For those of you who don’t know, the show is set in a women’s prison, and focuses on numerous different socio-ethnic groups, from a Russian cook to an African-American Army brat. Kimmy Schmidt is about a young girl who was kidnapped by a cult leader, who had other captives, and her eventually freeing from said captivity. She then moves to New York to make up for lost time, and from there things get great. A funny, funny show starring a super funny lady, Carrie Kemper.
I could on and on about a multitude of other shows I’ve seen on here (watch Voltron, it’s great!) but I’ve already written a lot here. If you have a spare $11 a month, be sure to sign up for Netflix and start watching! Leave a comment or message telling me how right or even wrong my assessment was!
