While fans are still patiently waiting for Winds of Winter to be released, there will at least be a special 20th anniversary edition of A Game of Thrones released this October. This special edition of the first book in the Song of Ice and Fire series is set to drop in October, according to publisher Bantam Spectra.
Martin recently posted about this upcoming edition, and he brought up how things were back during the initial release, and the current day status, of the world he created. Martin also stated he never anticipated such a meteoric rise and growth 20 years ago.
This special edition looks to be quite beautiful, as it will include a total of 73 black and white illustrations and pictures, as well as 8 full color photos. Comedian John Hodgman has written an introduction for the book as well.
A lot of the pictures are being pulled from existing sources, such as the GoT maps and the card and board games, but at least 38 will be original pieces of never-before-seen art from such artists as John Picacio, Paul Youll, Gary Gianni, Didier Graffet, Victor Moreno, Michael Komarck, Arantza Sestayo, Magali Villeneuve, Ted Nasmith, Levi Pinfold, and Marc Simonetti. In a press release, publisher Bantam stated “With gorgeous full-page illustrations to open every chapter, the mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure of this magnificent saga come to life as never before”
Fans will be able to pick this up on October 18…but the wait continues for Winds of Winter.
